Local educators seek space for new STEM program for elementary students

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 14, 2025, featured a proposal aimed at enhancing STEM education for elementary students in the area. Two local educators presented their vision for a program that would engage children in science, technology, engineering, and math activities throughout the summer and into the school year.

The educators expressed a desire to create a space for approximately 25 to 30 children to explore engineering concepts through hands-on activities such as building bridges, towers, and engaging in robotics and coding. They emphasized the importance of fostering creative thinking and interpersonal skills among youth, particularly in an age where technology often isolates them.

Despite their enthusiasm, the educators faced challenges in securing a suitable location for the program. They noted that many facilities in Humboldt were unavailable, and they preferred not to associate with a church to ensure inclusivity for all participants. The school buildings, while empty during the summer, were deemed unsuitable due to maintenance activities that would disrupt their program.

The educators outlined their need for a flexible space that could accommodate various activity stations and allow for movement among different projects. They also discussed their plans for outreach, primarily through social media and local community groups, to attract participants.

The proposed program aims to operate year-round, with sessions planned for evenings during the summer and immediately after school during the academic year. The educators clarified that they would provide their own materials, alleviating concerns about storage and maintenance at the chosen location.

The Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the proposal further, as the educators seek to establish a foundation for future STEM initiatives in Humboldt County.
