Carroll County Schools expand mental health services through partnership with Willowbrook at Tanner

In a gathering marked by a commitment to student well-being, the Carroll County Board meeting on July 14, 2025, showcased a significant partnership aimed at enhancing mental health services for local students. Under the warm glow of city hall lights, Lee Robinson from the Carroll County Schools introduced special guests from the Tanner Health System, highlighting the impactful collaboration with Willowbrook at Tanner.

This partnership is designed to provide comprehensive mental health services directly within schools, making critical support more accessible for students and their families. Robinson emphasized that the initiative is a proactive approach to address the evolving mental health needs of students, aiming to improve overall well-being in the district.

Kimberly Johnson, director of Willowbrook Counseling Center, elaborated on the partnership's success. She noted that since its inception, the collaboration has allowed for consistent access to therapists for children aged 4 to 17, significantly reducing barriers such as transportation. Previously, students often faced challenges in attending therapy sessions due to the need for a parent or guardian to drive them to clinics. Now, with therapists available on campus, students can receive support without missing valuable instructional time.

Johnson reported impressive statistics from the previous school year, revealing that 399 students were referred for therapy, resulting in 3,628 sessions conducted on school grounds. This marked an increase of 450 sessions compared to the previous year. The partnership also extended its reach beyond regular school hours, providing services during breaks and even offering telehealth options for students in need.

The collaboration has not only improved access to mental health resources but has also diverted students from emergency rooms during crises, ensuring they receive appropriate care from specialists in behavioral health. As the meeting concluded, the board expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership, recognizing its vital role in fostering a supportive environment for students in Carroll County.
