Cedar City plans flood mitigation project to manage stormwater at Woodbury Split

The Iron County Commission meeting on July 14, 2025, focused heavily on flood management and infrastructure improvements following significant rainfall events that have impacted the region. To address these ongoing issues, the commission is advocating for a project in collaboration with Cedar City to enhance the Woodbury Split. The proposed improvements include constructing a concrete wall to maintain water velocity and prevent sediment buildup, which has historically led to blockages and flooding. This project aims to manage water flow more effectively, especially during monsoonal events, and to protect against potential flooding from a 100-year storm event.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted plans for a new concrete flume that would allow for better control of water flow into the Cedar City pit, which serves as a recharge area for local water supplies. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to manage sediment and improve water quality, as the region has seen significant sediment buildup in waterways, complicating drainage and water management efforts.
