Sabina Weitzman seeks approval for site elements at historic Hanover Street dwellings

The Fredericksburg Architectural Review Board (ARB) convened on July 14, 2025, to discuss the approval of site elements for a historic property located at 301-303 Hanover Street. This property, constructed around 1825 in a federal style, is a significant part of the city’s historic district and has undergone several renovations in recent years.

During the meeting, Sabina Weitzman presented a request for approval concerning various site elements, including lighting fixtures, a trash enclosure, and mechanical equipment. The proposed lighting plan features six black powder-coated bollards with internal LEDs, wall sconces, and lantern-style fixtures, all designed to meet the city’s lighting standards while enhancing the property’s historic character.

The ARB also reviewed plans for two HVAC units, which will be discreetly located below grade and screened by a brick knee wall and wood fencing. Additionally, a wooden enclosure for trash totes is proposed, designed to fully obscure the bins from public view, with a maximum height of six feet.

Public comments were invited, and Danae Pecler, representing HFI, expressed support for the applicant's attention to detail in addressing the various site elements. No written public comments were received prior to the meeting.

The ARB concluded that the proposed changes align with the historic district design guidelines and city code standards, recommending approval of the application. This decision reflects the board's commitment to preserving the architectural integrity of Fredericksburg while accommodating modern needs. The ongoing enhancements to the property are expected to contribute positively to the community's aesthetic and historical landscape.
