Shawnee County commissioners approve Timber Ridge Subdivision Street Benefit District funding

Shawnee County Commissioners approved a significant resolution at their July 14 meeting, establishing the Timber Ridge Subdivision Street Benefit District. This initiative will facilitate the construction of streets for an 18-lot area, with a total project cost of $730,000. Public Works Director Courtney House highlighted that the petitioner will cover drainage improvements separately, allowing the construction costs to be assessed equally against the benefiting parcels over a 20-year period. The resolution passed unanimously, signaling a step forward in local infrastructure development.

In addition to the street project, the meeting also addressed public health initiatives. The commissioners approved a contract renewal with the Kansas Children's Service League, granting $364,700 for outreach and early intervention services aimed at at-risk families. Health Department Director Theresa Fisher emphasized the importance of this long-standing partnership, which enables access to state funds for vital community programs.

Parks and Recreation also made headlines with the approval of several contracts aimed at enhancing local recreational facilities. A bid was awarded for the Family Park Trail construction project, funded by a grant from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Furthermore, sponsorship agreements with Mercury Broadband and Jimmy John's were approved, providing internet services and financial support for community events, respectively.

The meeting concluded with discussions on emergency management upgrades, the appointment of a new director of facilities management, and the expansion of mental health facilities within the adult detention center. Each of these decisions reflects the county's commitment to improving infrastructure, public health, and community services.
