Indianapolis cemetery excavation project prepares for 2026 construction start

The City Council of Indianapolis held a public information meeting on July 14, 2025, to discuss the ongoing excavation at the cemetery site related to the White River Innovation District project. The meeting highlighted the project's timeline, educational initiatives, and the archaeological work being conducted.

The excavation is currently underway, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026, contingent upon the progress of the cemetery excavation. This timeline reflects the careful planning and coordination required to ensure the project proceeds smoothly.

A notable aspect of this initiative is the Indiology internship program, which aims to engage high school students in the field of archaeology. Eight interns are participating, with three present at the meeting. Ryan Peterson, the lead archaeologist for the project, provided an overview of the excavation process. Limited excavation began in October 2024, with a dedicated crew working continuously since December. The team is employing a meticulous approach to uncover grave shafts, ensuring that the excavation is conducted safely and respectfully.

Peterson emphasized the collaborative effort involved in the project, thanking the City of Indianapolis, the community advisory group, and the construction team for their commitment. The excavation process is designed to be slow and methodical, allowing for careful documentation while minimizing disturbance to the burial sites.
