Leominster residents raise concerns over horse racing project and landfill issues

Concerns over a proposed horse racing track and landfill development dominated the Leominster City Council meeting on July 14, 2025, as residents voiced strong objections to both projects.

Laurie Salafi, a local resident, raised alarms about the horse racing initiative, describing it as a "joke" that would attract low-quality horses. She emphasized that even seasoned gamblers criticize the proposal, questioning its viability and relevance in a city already saturated with entertainment options, including 26 bars. Salafi pointed out that with gambling now accessible via smartphones, the need for a new sports bar is questionable.

She referenced quarterly testing data that consistently shows exceedance notices for hazardous substances like benzene and methane near residential areas. Salafi expressed alarm over the proximity of these wells to homes, noting that they are less than 100 feet away from residential properties.

Moreover, she revealed that parts of the Mechanic Street landfill had been relocated without proper mitigation, raising further safety concerns. Salafi urged the council to reconsider the implications of allowing new developments on top of existing landfill sites, stressing the potential risks to public health and safety.
