Carpinteria Library reports strong summer programs and community support initiatives

The Carpinteria City Council meeting on July 14, 2025, featured a comprehensive report from the Carpinteria Community Library, highlighting various programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement and support, particularly for immigrant populations.

Library staff reported strong participation in the summer reading program, with approximately 144 children attending weekly discussions. Upcoming events include a family astronomy program on July 24 and a bilingual music concert on August 2, which will conclude the summer reading activities. Additionally, the library has launched a seed lending library, offering 63 varieties of vegetables to encourage gardening and self-sufficiency among community members.

The library is also focused on serving the immigrant community in Carpinteria. Ongoing programs include free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and a citizenship test preparation course, which currently has six participants. The library is collaborating with the Mexican consulate to provide resources on dual citizenship and passport applications. A lawyer will also assist participants with their citizenship applications at no cost.

In terms of staffing, the library has welcomed two summer interns and is in the process of interviewing candidates for a community engagement specialist position. The library's strategic plan is set to be released on July 30, with presentations scheduled for the library advisory commission and the board of trustees in August and September, respectively.
