Alabama State Board approves new education standards and program evaluations

The Alabama Board of Education convened on July 15, 2025, to discuss several key agenda items focused on improving educational standards and programs across the state. The meeting began with an overview of ongoing changes in higher education standards, particularly emphasizing the science of reading. Board members noted that institutions have proactively aligned their curricula with these new standards, even before formal adoption by the board.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the approval of educator preparation programs at various universities, including Alabama State University, Athens State University, Auburn University, Miles College, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of West Alabama, Stillman College, Troy University, and Tuskegee University. Each program received unanimous support from board members, reflecting a collective commitment to enhancing teacher preparation.

The board also addressed amendments to the Alabama Administrative Code concerning flexibility for students in priority schools. These amendments were prompted by recent legislative changes that redefined failing schools and introduced a new category of "priority schools," which will allow students to apply for scholarships to attend non-public or alternative public schools.

Additionally, the board discussed the introduction of a financial literacy exam as a graduation requirement, alongside the existing civics exam. This change aims to ensure that students are equipped with essential life skills before graduating high school.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on the evaluation of the state superintendent, Dr. Mackey, whose performance was noted to have improved significantly over the past year. Board members expressed their appreciation for his leadership and the positive changes within the Department of Education.
