Town Council amends emergency response ordinance to include mayor's authority

Jonesborough's Board of Mayor and Aldermen made significant strides in governance during their July 15, 2025, meeting, focusing on crucial updates to emergency response protocols and budgetary planning for the upcoming fiscal year.

A key decision was the amendment of an ordinance regarding the declaration of a state of emergency. Craig Ford, the town administrator, explained that while working towards state accreditation for the police department, it was discovered that the current ordinance did not specify who could declare a state of emergency within the town. The amendment rectifies this oversight by including the mayor and town administrator in the declaration process. Janet, a finance officer, highlighted the establishment of a capital projects fund, which aims to enhance transparency in tracking government projects. This fund will consolidate capital expenditures, making it easier for residents to see how public funds are utilized.
