Jonesboro Council addresses tree trimming and employee evaluations amid budget concerns

The recent Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting on July 15, 2025, highlighted several key initiatives aimed at improving community safety and infrastructure, as well as addressing employee evaluations.

One of the primary discussions centered around the need for a tree trimming operation throughout the town. Concerns were raised about trees encroaching on roadways, which could pose hazards for larger vehicles. Alderman Craig Ford was tasked with coordinating efforts between the Parks and Recreation and Streets departments to ensure that trees are pruned safely and aesthetically. The goal is to maintain a clearance of at least 14 feet above roadways, preventing potential accidents and enhancing the overall appearance of the town.

In addition to tree maintenance, the board addressed the lack of employee evaluations, which are crucial for performance assessments and potential promotions. Human Resources Director Michelle Shelton Stewart presented evaluation forms to the board, aiming to implement a structured review process for town employees. The board plans to finalize these forms by their next meeting on July 29, with hopes of completing evaluations within 60 days.

The meeting also featured public input regarding a proposed 28% increase in the town's tax base. Resident Lon Reed expressed strong opposition to the increase, arguing that it would disproportionately affect long-time residents on fixed incomes. Reed emphasized the need for the town to focus on funding improvements through new residents and businesses rather than burdening existing community members.

Other topics included the approval of a new dumpster design for downtown, aimed at improving waste management aesthetics, and plans for sidewalk renovations on West Main Street to enhance accessibility and safety. The board is committed to making these improvements as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the town's infrastructure.
