Annapolis Police Department awards six scholarships to local students

Under the warm glow of city hall lights, the Annapolis City Council gathered on July 14, 2025, to celebrate a significant milestone in community support and youth empowerment. The evening was marked by the presentation of scholarships aimed at fostering the next generation of leaders in Annapolis.

Since its inception in 2017, the Annapolis Police Department's scholarship program has awarded nearly 30 scholarships, with six recipients honored this year. Each scholarship, valued at $1,000, is designed to support students pursuing higher education or vocational training, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity by lowering GPA requirements. This initiative not only opens doors for academic advancement but also encourages students to explore trade schools, broadening their career options.

Chief of Police, who spoke passionately about the importance of investing in youth, emphasized that such programs are vital for crime prevention and community development. "If we want them to do well, then we have to show them," he stated, highlighting the police department's dedication to nurturing relationships within the community.

The ceremony included heartfelt acknowledgments of the scholarship recipients: Jesse b Smith, Brianna Smith, LaKayla Johnson, Treshawn Henderson, and Jay Johnson. Each was presented with a citation recognizing their achievements and the opportunities that lie ahead. The funding for these scholarships comes from generous anonymous donations, including a tribute to the victims of the Capital Gazette shooting in 2018, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
