Decatur upgrades natural gas connection with Northwest Alabama Gas District

During the recent Decatur City Council work session, officials discussed critical updates regarding the city's natural gas supply and infrastructure. The meeting highlighted the need for a new contract with the Northwest Alabama Gas District, which would allow Decatur to tap into an existing connection that has not been utilized for several years. This decision comes as the demand for natural gas in North Alabama continues to rise, driven by regional growth in cities like Decatur and Huntsville.

Historically, Decatur relied on a new natural gas pipeline established in the early 2000s, which provided sufficient capacity at the time. However, as the region's growth has surged, the available gas pipeline capacity has diminished. City officials noted that the existing connection with Northwest Alabama Gas District is now crucial for meeting the increasing natural gas needs of the community. Refurbishing this interconnect is seen as a cost-effective solution to ensure a reliable gas supply for both residential and industrial customers.

In addition to the contract discussions, the council also reviewed a resolution for a $79,035 expenditure for professional services related to the Burning Tree area. This project aims to install approximately 6,800 feet of new natural gas main along Red Bank Road, which will connect to Highway 31 South. Currently, the area has dead-end lines that pose a risk of service interruptions for customers. By closing this loop, the city aims to enhance the reliability of gas service and support ongoing growth in the region.

The discussions underscored the city's proactive approach to managing its natural gas infrastructure amid rising demand.
