Saginaw Future supports Menards tax exemption for new production facility project

In the heart of Saginaw, city council members gathered on July 14, 2025, to address pressing community concerns and economic development initiatives. The evening began with a focus on a significant proposal from Menards Incorporated, presented by Steve Hensley, the Community and Economic Development Director for Saginaw Future. Hensley advocated for an industrial facilities tax exemption to support Menards' redevelopment project along Veterans Memorial Parkway, North Washington Avenue, and Finley Street.

Hensley highlighted the importance of this project, which includes the construction of a new 39,000 square foot bagging production facility. This facility is expected to enhance Menards' manufacturing capabilities in Saginaw, contributing to the local economy with an investment exceeding $20 million. The project promises to create jobs and generate future tax revenue, marking a pivotal step in the city’s industrial development.

As the meeting progressed, community members voiced their concerns. Melanie Velasco, a local resident, expressed her frustration over the condition of roads near the hospital, the prevalence of abandoned houses, and safety issues related to basketball hoops left in the streets. Her heartfelt plea underscored the challenges residents face daily, particularly regarding infrastructure and public safety.

Another speaker, Donovan Monte Gomez, shifted the focus to public safety, recalling a recent hostage situation at the Saginaw Township branch that had drawn a significant law enforcement response. While he praised the officers for their bravery, he criticized the lengthy resolution time, raising questions about emergency response effectiveness in the community.
