Sarpy County partners with At Ease USA for veteran mental health services

In a recent Sarpy County Board meeting, officials discussed a significant partnership aimed at enhancing mental health support for veterans. The agreement between the Sarpy County Department of Corrections and At Ease USA, a nonprofit organization, focuses on providing therapeutic and peer support services for veterans involved in the county's Veterans Court and those incarcerated.

Corrections Director Joe Martin highlighted the positive impact of At Ease USA's services over the past year, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration. Gail Williams, the clinical director of At Ease USA, detailed the organization's commitment to supporting veterans and their families. She noted that many veterans face untreated mental health issues, which can lead to legal troubles. The $20,000 funding from the county has been instrumental in providing approximately 500 hours of support in both the Veterans Court and the jail.

Williams shared that the organization offers not only therapy but also wellness programming, including financial literacy classes aimed at helping veterans reintegrate into civilian life. She recounted a recent graduation ceremony for participants in the Veterans Court, which underscored the program's success in fostering recovery and rehabilitation.

The meeting also featured a discussion about a new film titled "Sheepdog," which portrays the struggles of a veteran facing mental health challenges and the transformative journey through the Veterans Court system. Williams expressed the importance of such narratives in raising awareness and understanding of veterans' experiences.

Despite the progress made, Williams acknowledged that the current funding is insufficient to meet the growing needs of the veteran community. The discussions at the meeting reflect a broader commitment to addressing mental health issues among veterans in Sarpy County, highlighting the ongoing challenges and the necessity for increased support and resources.
