Police Department celebrates 30th anniversary and plans community events

The Rio Grande City Commission meeting on July 14, 2025, highlighted several community-focused initiatives and updates from local departments, emphasizing the city's commitment to public safety and community engagement.

One of the key announcements came from the police department, which is currently training 14 cadets at the police academy, with graduation expected in September. To celebrate the department's 30th anniversary on August 1, a special event is planned, inviting the community to join in the festivities. Additionally, the police department will host a back-to-school co-ed softball tournament on the same day, fostering community spirit.

In terms of funding, the police department has received pre-approval for $250,000 under Operation Lone Star, aimed at enhancing local law enforcement capabilities. This funding will cover overtime costs and the purchase of new radios, although it will not fully address all equipment needs.

The meeting also announced the annual "Shop with the Cops" event scheduled for August 5, where officers will assist local children with school shopping. This year, the event will be complemented by a community outreach initiative offering free haircuts for students, in collaboration with Fades Barber Shop.

The city is also taking steps to improve road safety through a TxDOT grant for Operation Slowdown, which will increase police presence in targeted areas to reduce speeding.

In other discussions, the commission addressed animal control initiatives, including a successful spay and neuter voucher program that quickly distributed all available vouchers. Plans for a new animal control facility are underway, with designs ready for review in upcoming meetings.

The fire department reported a busy month with over 80 calls in both May and June, and the completion of maintenance checks on 653 fire hydrants, ensuring community safety and readiness.

The Kelsey Bass Museum shared updates on recent tours and community engagement efforts, showcasing the city's cultural initiatives.
