ARC of Quad Cities celebrates Disability Pride Month with events and fundraising

The Rock Island City Council meeting on July 14, 2025, featured a significant presentation in honor of Disability Pride Month. Representatives from the ARC of the Quad Cities, including members of the Speak Out group, addressed the council to highlight the importance of disability awareness and advocacy.

During the meeting, a spokesperson emphasized that July is a time to celebrate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. The group, which includes individuals with disabilities, aims to promote self-advocacy and raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities. They serve approximately 400 individuals year-round and are currently hosting a fundraiser to support their initiatives.

The ARC of the Quad Cities also announced an upcoming event, a Disability Awareness Night at the Ballpark, scheduled for August 8. This event, organized in collaboration with the Disability Awareness Coalition, aims to further promote disability pride and community engagement.

Concerns were raised during the presentation regarding potential future cuts to Medicaid, which could significantly impact individuals with disabilities. The Speak Out group has been proactive in voicing their concerns, having written letters to local and federal legislators to advocate for the needs of their community.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for public comments, allowing community members to engage further with the council on these important issues. The discussions underscored the ongoing commitment of the Rock Island City Council to support and advocate for individuals with disabilities in the community.
