Whiteside described work to reduce nonurgent visits to health offices. Nurses tracked three high-frequency visit reasons — bandages, headaches and stomachaches — during two-week sampling periods and then trained staff and changed procedures. She said elementary students generated more stomachache visits while secondary students made more headache visits; districtwide, elementary students spent 6 hours and 30 minutes in the health office in a two-week Band-Aid tracking period, and secondary schools recorded 36 hours and 3 minutes for headaches during a separate sampling period. After the data collection and education campaign, monthly health visits decreased by between 9 and 932 visits depending on level and site, Whiteside said.
Whiteside also summarized the district's caseload for chronic and rescue conditions: the district manages 273 individual health-care plans covering more than 300 conditions, and nurses oversee daily and as-needed medications for dozens of students, including multiple students with Type 1 diabetes, albuterol inhalers, epinephrine injectors and seizure rescue medications. \"We are the bridge for health and education. Our mission is to optimize students' health and academic achievement,\" Whiteside said.
