School District proposes therapy dog program to enhance student mental health and engagement

The South Fayette Township School District is set to introduce a therapy dog program aimed at enhancing student mental health and academic performance, following discussions during the SFTSD Board Meeting on July 15, 2025. The initiative, which is expected to have no cost to the district, will allow approved staff members to bring certified therapy dogs into schools, providing emotional support and reducing stress among students.

Research presented at the meeting highlighted the benefits of therapy dogs, including improved emotional regulation, lower anxiety levels, and enhanced student engagement. Studies indicate that interactions with therapy dogs can lead to significant reductions in stress hormones and increases in positive hormones like oxytocin and serotonin. Notably, up to 84% of students reported decreased anxiety, and 50% experienced a reduction in symptoms of depression.

The proposed program will require therapy dogs to meet specific health and certification standards, including proof of vaccinations and liability insurance for handlers. The initiative aims to create a supportive environment for all students, including those with special needs, by fostering social skills and emotional well-being.

In addition to the benefits for students, the program is anticipated to positively impact staff morale. Previous experiences with therapy dogs in schools have shown improvements in student behavior, attendance, and academic performance. For instance, a program in Delaware reported a 32% increase in reading scores after therapy dogs visited first-grade classrooms.

The board emphasized the importance of community engagement and clear communication regarding the program's implementation, including addressing potential concerns such as allergies and cultural sensitivities.
