Landmark Commission Approves Sign Variance for Elevate 1828 Event Venue

A significant decision emerged from the July 14, 2025, Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in Canal Winchester, where the commission approved a variance for a new sign at the Elevate 1828 event center. The proposed sign, measuring 9 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall, will feature an aluminum cabinet on a stone base, designed to enhance visibility for the venue.

The Landmark Commission had previously reviewed the sign design in May 2025, recommending approval with the condition that the stone base matches the existing stone patio at the facility. The commission's endorsement was crucial, as it allowed the event center to exceed the standard 10 square feet for sign face area, a request justified by the site's unique characteristics.

Commission members noted that the property, which houses multiple historic structures, is the largest assembly in the Old Town District. This context underscored the need for clear identification of the private event venue, which is essential for both operators and visitors. The proposed sign's placement, set back more than 25 feet from the right of way, aligns with the district's requirements, further supporting the variance request.
