Leola County Expands Innovative Student Mentor Program to New School Districts

The Lee County Services Committee Meeting on July 15, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in technology and educational support programs aimed at enhancing community services.

Paul, a key team member, reported on the ongoing upgrades within the county's IT infrastructure, including the migration of computers from Windows 10 to Windows 11 ahead of Microsoft's security support deadline. He also mentioned improvements made to the GIS department's server, which will enhance performance for their operations. Additionally, preparations are underway for new election software and networking projects related to the old jail facility.

In a notable educational development, Josh presented an expansion of the innovative student mentor program, which has shown promising results in reducing discipline issues and improving attendance and academic performance. Originally piloted in Amboy School District, the program will now include Rock Falls, Foreston, and Mount Morency School Districts, with aspirations to reach all 24 public school districts in the region.

The meeting also addressed the growing demand for educational outreach, with over 20 students currently on a waitlist for assistance in earning their Illinois high school diploma. Furthermore, the alternative school is set to enhance vocational education opportunities, preparing students for the workforce through partnerships and a new work-based learning program starting this fall.

As the meeting concluded, discussions touched on the ongoing challenges related to federal grant funding for the mini McKinney Vento homeless program, emphasizing the need for continued support for homeless students and families in the community.
