Joliet Hosts Public Meeting on Des Plaines River Bridge Community Plan Funding

Residents of Joliet can look forward to significant improvements along the Chicago Street corridor as the city council reported progress on various infrastructure projects during their recent meeting. Trees have been planted in planter boxes, and topsoil has been added to enhance the streetscape. The installation of brick pavers is underway between Jefferson Street and Cass, with electrical and concrete work continuing this week.

However, pedestrians should note that the crosswalk on the south leg of Cass Street at Chicago Street will remain closed until the brick paver installation is completed. City officials advise using the west, north, and east crosswalks at this intersection. In positive news, fence panels will be removed in areas where brick paver work is finished, allowing for improved access.

In addition to these updates, the city is inviting community members to participate in shaping future investments through the I-80 Des Plaines River Bridge Community Plan. A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the All Nation Church of God, located at 507 Water Street. This meeting aims to gather input on how $3.5 million allocated by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for community improvements should be utilized in neighborhoods affected by the reconstruction of the Interstate 80 Bridge over the Des Plaines River. Attendees can enjoy pizza and will have access to Spanish interpretation services.

Lastly, an update was provided on the Brandon Road Bridge, which is expected to open by the end of 2025. Although this bridge is located in unincorporated Joliet Township, its completion will benefit the broader Joliet area.
