HEB ISD Task Force Discusses Student Safety and Community Involvement Strategies

Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD is taking significant steps to enhance student safety and community engagement following a recent Board Work Session held on July 14, 2025. The meeting focused on implementing new safety protocols and fostering a collaborative environment among students, parents, and educators.

One of the key outcomes from the session was the commitment to require all secondary students to wear ID badges, a measure aimed at improving security across the district. This decision aligns with feedback from community members who emphasized the importance of visible safety measures during school events. Additionally, enhanced security protocols will be implemented during special events, including the use of metal detectors at Pennington Stadium to prevent unauthorized items from entering school premises.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of student involvement in safety discussions. Betley Wade, a former student and current sophomore at the University of Texas at Arlington, shared her insights from participating in the Student Safety Task Force. Wade emphasized that while students may feel safe, it is crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for any situation. She advocated for empowering students to recognize and report concerning behaviors, reinforcing that preparedness should stem from a sense of responsibility rather than fear.

Community engagement was a recurring theme, with parents like Joe Shaw and Autumn Rio expressing their desire for increased volunteer opportunities within schools. Shaw noted the importance of parental presence in creating a safe and supportive environment, while Rio stressed the need for effective communication between the school district and families. Both parents underscored that open dialogue is essential for fostering trust and collaboration within the community.

Counseling resources were also a focal point of discussion, with recommendations to increase the number of counselors available to students. This move aims to address the growing mental health needs among students, ensuring they receive the support necessary for their emotional and academic well-being.
