City Council Approves Ice Ribbon Program and Park Fee Structure

Holland City Council has approved new ice rink programming aimed at enhancing community engagement and accessibility during their recent meeting on July 16, 2025. The initiative, spearheaded by Parks and Recreation staff, will introduce a structured schedule for open skate sessions and private events at the newly developed Ice Ribbon.

The council discussed the implementation of a program primarily targeting second graders, with flexibility to accommodate other age groups based on school preferences. The pricing model for private events will be set at $500 per hour, plus $5 per skater, ensuring that these events do not interfere with regular open skate hours. This approach mirrors existing practices at local facilities, such as Bowles Pool, where private rentals are scheduled outside of public swim times.

The Ice Ribbon will feature a comprehensive Saturday schedule, including learn-to-skate classes and multiple open skate sessions, designed to maximize ice availability for the community. Staff estimates indicate a need for approximately 30 employees to manage operations effectively, with eight staff members on duty during peak times.

Additionally, the council confirmed that financial assistance through the Sal Perez funds will remain available for families in need, allowing them to participate in open skate and learn-to-skate programs.

The council unanimously approved the proposed park fees and charges, marking a significant step towards fostering community involvement in recreational activities. This initiative is expected to enhance access to ice skating for residents and promote a vibrant community atmosphere.
