Montgomery County Council Considers Leaf Blower Ban Exemption for Landscaping Companies

She advocated for a short-term exemption for professional landscaping companies to continue using gas-powered leaf blowers during the busy leaf removal season from October to December. Ross pointed out that the original legislation, while well-intentioned, has not provided adequate support for businesses transitioning to electric alternatives. She mentioned that the costs associated with new equipment and infrastructure upgrades are significant, with some companies reporting investments exceeding $30,000.

Ross also raised concerns about the practicality of electric equipment, noting that batteries often do not last a full workday and that charging them requires additional resources, such as generators. This situation could undermine the environmental goals of the legislation, as it may lead to increased noise and emissions from generators.

Jeff Juno, another local business owner, echoed these sentiments, stating that the transition to electric blowers is being implemented without sufficient support or realistic expectations. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach that considers the operational realities faced by landscaping companies.

The council members listened attentively to the testimonies, acknowledging the complexities of balancing environmental goals with the economic viability of local businesses.
