Saco Community Volunteers Highlight Impact of Age Friendly Transportation Services

Community support for Saco's Age Friendly initiative took center stage at the recent Saco City Council meeting, with passionate testimonials from local residents highlighting the program's vital role in assisting seniors and those in need.

David Steed, a founding member of Age Friendly, shared his experiences driving a shuttle service that helps residents without transportation access to shopping and food pantries. "These people are very grateful," he noted, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their independence. Steed also mentioned the program's outreach efforts, including technology demonstrations aimed at enhancing the lives of seniors.

Ronnie Hanson, a new volunteer, echoed Steed's sentiments, expressing how moved she has been by the stories of those she helps transport to medical appointments. "If that service wasn't there, I don't know what these people would do," she said, underscoring the critical need for such support in the community.

Veteran Dan McCluskey also praised the initiative, stating that without the volunteers, he would struggle to attend his numerous medical appointments. "I'd be up the creek without a paddle," he remarked, thanking the council for their ongoing support of the program.
