Redmond Police Chief Reports Increased Overtime Due to Paid Leave Oregon Impact

The City of Redmond City Council convened on June 24, 2025, to address several pressing issues, primarily focusing on public safety and budget adjustments. Chief Lewis emphasized that the current staffing shortages have led to an increase in mandatory overtime, with more call-ins for overtime in the past year than he has experienced in his 26-year career. He noted that the department typically averages one to two homicides per year, but this fiscal year has seen four homicides, necessitating extensive detective work and further straining resources.

In response to these challenges, the council discussed a budget adjustment to address the overtime costs incurred by the police department. Chief Lewis indicated that the overtime expenses could be covered by reallocating funds from the transportation budget, allowing for a more stable financial footing for the police operations.

Additionally, the council reviewed ongoing projects, including the HVAC system installation at City Hall, which has been delayed, leaving the building without heat during recent cold days. This project was previously approved by the council in March and is currently underway.
