National Grid seeks approval to replace aging gas mains in Newton

The Newton City Public Facilities Committee convened on July 16, 2025, to discuss critical infrastructure improvements, particularly focusing on gas main replacements along Commonwealth Avenue. National Grid representatives presented a detailed plan to replace outdated gas lines, some dating back to 1915 and 1927, with modern plastic alternatives. Mary Mulaney, a representative from National Grid, outlined the scope of the project, which includes replacing approximately 310 feet of 12-inch coated steel gas main and various lengths of cast iron lines with new plastic gas mains. The work is necessitated by ongoing construction efforts led by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), which requires the relocation of gas mains to facilitate drainage improvements in the city.

Committee members expressed concerns regarding the timing of these replacements, particularly in relation to recent street repaving efforts. Councilor Danvers highlighted the importance of prioritizing gas line replacements in areas that are critical for gas distribution, while questioning the necessity of work in cul-de-sacs or dead-end streets. Mulaney clarified that the project is driven by MassDOT's requirements, indicating that the gas main relocations are essential for the broader infrastructure improvements.

The committee's discussions underscored the city's commitment to transitioning away from gas dependency, as well as the challenges posed by aging infrastructure. The planned upgrades are expected to mitigate safety hazards and improve service reliability for residents.
