Bernalillo County Plans Bridge Repairs Connecting A Montoya Roosevelt Middle School and Community Center

The Tijeras Creek bridge, a vital link for the community, is closed indefinitely following severe flood damage, prompting urgent discussions at a recent Bernalillo County meeting. Public Works Technical Services Director Brian Lopez revealed that the reconstruction process will be lengthy due to significant delays in acquiring necessary construction materials, with estimates suggesting a wait time of up to a year.

Lopez emphasized the importance of the bridge, which connects A Montoya Roosevelt Middle School and the Los Vicinos Community Center, stating, “We know how important the bridge is to the community of Tijeras.” He outlined a comprehensive recovery plan that includes evaluating the damage, redesigning the bridge for enhanced resilience, and ensuring a safer structure to withstand future storms. The goal is to begin construction by spring 2026, although a confirmed start date remains pending.

In light of the bridge closure, Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Director Andre Dixon assured residents that the Los Vicinos Community Center will continue to operate and provide programs. However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by the bridge's closure, particularly for students accessing the school. Dixon urged parents to adjust their schedules and be patient as the community navigates these changes, highlighting ongoing discussions with Albuquerque Public Schools to establish a bus stop to alleviate traffic congestion.
