Deputy Anthony Rausch Recognized for Heroic Rescue of Unresponsive Driver in Crash

During a recent meeting of the Washington County Public Safety Committee, Deputy Anthony Rausch was commended for his heroic actions in a life-threatening incident that occurred on June 26, 2025. Sheriff Schulteis presented the commendation, highlighting Deputy Rausch's bravery and quick thinking in response to a reckless driver who had crashed into the woods.

The incident began when multiple 911 calls reported a vehicle swerving dangerously on Interstate 41. Deputy Rausch quickly responded and was directed by a citizen to the crash site, where he found the vehicle heavily damaged and the driver unresponsive inside. Recognizing the imminent danger of fire, Deputy Rausch broke the driver's side window and extricated the driver, who weighed approximately 185 pounds, from the wreckage. After assessing the driver’s condition and finding a faint pulse, he dragged the individual to safety just as flames began to engulf the vehicle.

The driver, who later admitted to using fentanyl, was subsequently arrested for operating while intoxicated. The commendation emphasized that Deputy Rausch's actions not only saved a life but also exemplified the dedication and courage expected of law enforcement officers in perilous situations.

The meeting included a presentation of body camera footage from the incident, which provided a detailed account of the rescue efforts. Sheriff Schulteis noted that Deputy Rausch, who had recently graduated at the top of his class from the police academy, demonstrated exceptional skill and composure, acting with the decisiveness of a seasoned officer despite having only three years of patrol experience.

This commendation serves as a reminder of the critical role law enforcement plays in ensuring public safety and the often unpredictable nature of their work.
