Stantec reports on South Main water project completion issues and budget savings

Wolfeboro's South Main Water Main Replacement Project is nearing completion, with significant progress reported during the Select Board meeting on July 16, 2025. The project, which faced delays due to unforeseen infrastructure and challenging weather conditions, was initially scheduled for completion on June 6 but was extended to June 18. The total working days increased from 160 to 172, reflecting a 10% rise in allowable work time. Jonathan noted that the wet spring and hot June hampered turf establishment, prompting a $5,000 holdback from the contractor, Dawson's, until the turf is adequately established.

Financially, the project is approximately $450,000 under budget, with total construction costs around $2 million. This savings stemmed from efficient management of resources, including a reduction in necessary dewatering days and fewer lead service line replacements than anticipated. The project was funded through a combination of federal and local contributions, with the federal share covering about 60% of the costs.

Community feedback highlighted concerns about night work, particularly from local businesses and residents near the Brewster properties and Pickering House. Jonathan acknowledged these complaints and explained that night work was strategically chosen to minimize daytime traffic disruptions. He also addressed issues regarding the aesthetics of granite curbing and the challenges of maintaining traffic flow during construction.

Looking ahead, the Select Board is considering implementing mandatory night work for future projects to further reduce daytime disruptions.
