Santa Maria Urban Forester Addresses Oak Moth Infestation Impacting City Trees

Santa Maria's Veterans Memorial Park is facing a significant threat from the invasive Oak Moth, which is wreaking havoc on the city's trees. Scott Christian, the urban forester from the Recreation and Parks Department, highlighted the urgent situation during a recent meeting, explaining that the caterpillar stage of this pest is responsible for defoliating trees, leaving them vulnerable and stressed.

Christian noted that the Oak Moth's lifecycle has been exacerbated by two years of low winter rainfall, which typically helps control pest populations. The caterpillars, which can be seen hanging from webs and producing small green droppings, are not harmful to humans but pose a serious risk to the health of the trees.

To combat this issue, the city is implementing treatment measures aimed at breaking the Oak Moth's lifecycle and protecting the trees. Christian reassured the public that while the trees may look distressed now, they are capable of regrowing their leaves once the pest problem is addressed.
