Johnson Creek Watershed Council Launches Project to Retain Cold Water for Salmon Habitat

A significant environmental project aimed at enhancing salmon habitats in the Johnson Creek area was discussed during the Milwaukie City Council meeting on July 15, 2025. Jennifer Hamilton, the new executive director of the Johnson Creek Watershed Council, presented plans to install large wood structures in the creek to help retain cold water, which is crucial for salmon survival.

Hamilton explained that the project, funded by grants from OWEB and NOAA, seeks to address the rapid mixing of cold water from Johnson Creek with the warmer waters of the Willamette River. This temperature difference can be stressful for salmon, making it essential to maintain cooler water conditions for their habitat. The installation of large wood will not only help slow down the water flow but also provide necessary shelter for juvenile salmon.

The construction is set to begin in September, with cleanup scheduled for October. The council was informed that the project had been adjusted to avoid closing the Milwaukee Bay boat ramp, opting instead for a more efficient staging process. Hamilton assured the council that measures would be taken to minimize disruption to local wildlife during the construction phase, including the use of turbidity curtains to protect the habitat.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to restore natural habitats and improve the ecological health of the area, with the council expressing strong support for the project. The anticipated benefits include enhanced salmon survivability and reduced erosion along the Johnson Creek Delta, marking a positive step towards environmental restoration in Milwaukie.
