Royal Oaks Council Considers HOA Voting System for Loch Lomond Guardhouse Renovation

Miami Lakes officials are exploring new avenues for community engagement regarding capital improvements, as highlighted in a recent workshop meeting. The council discussed the need for a voting system that would allow residents to have a say in local projects, particularly focusing on the Loch Lomond Guardhouse renovation.

Currently, there is no established system for capital improvements, prompting a council member to reach out to Miami-Dade County about implementing a straw ballot system. However, it was noted that this approach may not be feasible due to restrictions on voter eligibility based on residency rather than homeownership. This limitation means that individuals who own property in the area but reside elsewhere would not be able to participate in voting on local issues.

To address this challenge, the council member proposed an alternative: an HOA voting system that could facilitate online or phone voting for residents. This system aims to ensure that community members can effectively voice their opinions on proposed improvements.

In addition to the voting system discussion, the council reviewed a proposal for the Loch Lomond Guardhouse renovation. A list of signatures from residents—representing at least 10% of the community—was presented to support the initiative. The proposed options for the renovation include a full demolition and rebuild, a renovation without a bathroom, or a renovation that includes a bathroom.

As the council prepares to discuss these proposals further in the next meeting, the emphasis remains on enhancing community involvement and ensuring that residents have a direct impact on decisions affecting their neighborhoods.
