Volunteers and local businesses are solicited to provide “welcome wagons” with toiletries, sunscreen, equipment and discount offers for visiting teams.

“We want this to be about competition and international friendship,” Steve Allen, tournament director, said. “Pool play ensures every team plays a minimum of five games and leaves with an experience.”

Louie Kitsakis, assistant coach for the District 9 Kirkland team, said the local host team qualified after winning the district tournament for the third straight year; he described a season focused on accountability, team bonding and preparation under heat conditions. He asked the community to “fill the bleachers” and to volunteer at younger age levels so future players have teams to join.

The tournament director said the event began in Kirkland in 1999 after a Little League expansion and that organizers intentionally use pool play so visiting teams get multiple guaranteed games rather than a short, single-elimination stay.

City staff and Little League leaders urged residents to submit slogan ideas and signs to support players; they also asked for volunteers to staff younger divisions and to contribute to welcome packages. Organizers said some visiting teams do not speak English and rely on community volunteers to help navigate lodging, transportation and local supplies.
