Dunedin City Council approves seawall construction project with FEMA reimbursement plans

Dunedin City Commission has taken a significant step forward in its seawall project, with plans to begin construction in August 2025. The project, which is budgeted at $3.5 million, aims to enhance the structural integrity of the seawall while ensuring timely completion within 150 days.

During the recent City Commission meeting, officials expressed confidence in the selected contractor, citing positive recommendations from other municipalities, including Green Acres. "Unless we find something that they did wrong, I really can't sort of reject the bid," stated a city representative, emphasizing the contractor's strong track record.

Commissioner Gillard highlighted the importance of timely project completion, asking about penalties for delays. The city confirmed that liquidated damages are included in the contract to incentivize on-time delivery. The contractor assured the commission that they can meet the tight schedule, which is crucial for minimizing disruptions to the community.

The seawall design incorporates innovative materials, including coated steel pilings, which are expected to provide enhanced durability against corrosion. The new wall will be approximately six inches higher than the existing structure, improving flood resilience and drainage.

FEMA reimbursement is anticipated for the project, with officials stressing that the funding will primarily come from state resources, alleviating the financial burden on local taxpayers. "Our goal is not to be our money; I mean, the state's money," emphasized a commissioner.

As the project gears up, city officials are committed to maintaining public access and minimizing disruptions during construction. The contractor will manage traffic and pedestrian safety, ensuring that local businesses and residents are not adversely affected.
