Trails Committee moves forward with Peninsula Trail sign and bridge project updates

The Southborough Trails Committee is making significant strides in advancing local trail projects, with a focus on completing signage and bridge construction by the end of the year. During a recent meeting on July 17, 2025, committee members discussed the installation of interpretive signs and a map kiosk, emphasizing the urgency to finalize these elements before the grant deadline on December 31.

The committee confirmed that there are no obstacles to moving forward with the signage project, which includes a large kiosk displaying a map and accompanying text. The signs will be installed by an external company, as the project exceeds the capabilities of the Department of Public Works. Structural engineers have completed necessary flow tests, confirming that the bridge height will remain largely unchanged. A bid package for the bridge construction is expected to be ready within the next two weeks, with plans to post legal requirements and solicit bids in August.

Financial discussions also took center stage, as the committee addressed funding for additional testing related to the bridge project. They are seeking to allocate $3,200 from their Phase 2 budget to cover unexpected costs, while also exploring the possibility of transferring $47,000 from Phase 1 funds to support ongoing trail development. The committee is closely monitoring budget constraints, particularly in light of fluctuating steel prices that could impact overall project costs.
