City Meeting Discusses Trail Maintenance and New Footbridge at Hybrids Park

The Spokane Bicycle Advisory Board convened on July 15, 2025, to discuss various issues affecting local cycling infrastructure and community engagement. Key topics included maintenance concerns on popular cycling routes and proposals for new projects aimed at enhancing connectivity for cyclists.

During the meeting, board members highlighted the deteriorating condition of the Centennial Trail, particularly a section with uneven brick pavement that poses challenges for cyclists. Members noted that the roots of nearby trees have caused significant damage, leading to gaps in the pavement that can be jarring for riders, especially those on road bikes. Suggestions were made to apply a sand-textured coating to improve traction and reduce moss growth on these surfaces.

Additionally, members discussed the need for better maintenance in certain areas, such as Maxwell Mission and Maple Ash, where litter accumulation has become a concern. Participants encouraged the community to report issues through the city’s 311 service, which has been responsive in addressing such problems in the past.

Public comments included a proposal for a new footbridge in Hybrids Park, which would connect to existing roadways and enhance access to trails along the power line corridor. This initiative aims to improve connectivity between neighborhoods and local parks, promoting cycling and walking as viable transportation options.

The meeting concluded with a call for community members to continue sharing their feedback and suggestions, with an invitation to bring additional concerns to the next meeting in August.
