Maria Gonzalez Elected Justice of the Peace After Career as Court Interpreter

Adriana Olaiz, the newly elected Justice of the Peace for Santa Cruz County, shared her inspiring journey during a recent community meeting. Her path to public service began after raising her three children, aged 26, 23, and 20, in Nogales. Once her children left for college, Olaiz sought a new direction and pursued a career in court interpreting, a decision that would ultimately lead her to the bench.

Olaiz attended the University of Arizona, where she completed courses necessary for certification as a court interpreter. She began working in the superior court in 2018 and quickly developed a passion for the judicial system. Following the retirement of Justice Jeju Velasquez in late 2023, Olaiz decided to run for the elected position of Justice of the Peace, a role she felt called to after her experiences in the court system. Her campaign took her across Santa Cruz County, where she connected with residents and earned their trust and support.

During the meeting, Olaiz candidly discussed the challenges she faced, particularly her struggle with public speaking. Despite her extensive experience as an interpreter, she admitted that the fear of speaking in front of an audience was daunting. "It's just stage fright," she explained, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and adapting to new vocabulary and concepts in her role.

Olaiz's commitment to improving her communication skills reflects her dedication to serving the community effectively. She encourages others to step out of their comfort zones, recognizing that overcoming personal challenges can lead to growth and success.
