Design Changes at Taft Intersection Enhance Safety for Downhill Cyclists

Safety improvements for cyclists took center stage at the Boulder City Transportation Advisory Board meeting, with a focus on redesigning the Taft Intersection to reduce accidents. Daniel Schieder, a key speaker, highlighted alarming crash patterns involving southbound vehicles turning right in front of downhill cyclists, particularly in the bike lane.

To address these safety concerns, the proposed design includes relocating a driveway curb cut to minimize conflict points along Folsom Street. Additionally, the plan features a raised crossing that will slow down turning vehicles, enhancing visibility for cyclists approaching from behind. This change aims to create a safer environment for both cyclists and motorists.

Another significant adjustment involves shifting the bus stop to the opposite side of the creek, which will help eliminate conflicts between cyclists and passengers getting on and off the bus. This move is expected to improve the flow of traffic and enhance safety for all road users.

Board member Hernan expressed his support for the project, recalling his own experiences biking in the area and emphasizing the need for safer routes. The proposed changes are set to make a substantial impact on cyclist safety, marking a positive step forward for Boulder’s transportation infrastructure.
