Superintendent Ford Slack introduced a new approach to Ketchikan Gateway Borough School Board meetings during a work session on July 17, 2025. This marks a significant shift in how the board will manage its agenda and enhance communication among members.
In her first meeting, Superintendent Slack emphasized the importance of setting a clear agenda during work sessions. This new structure allows board members to discuss and prioritize agenda items before the formal business meetings, ensuring that discussions are focused and efficient. "This should give you a little tighter control," she noted, highlighting the board's ability to manage the topics that will be addressed.
Starting in August, board members will receive concise written reports from directors, which will be included in their meeting packets. This initiative aims to streamline information sharing and keep board members informed ahead of discussions. By September, principals will also contribute simple written reports, further enhancing transparency and engagement.
Additionally, the school year will kick off with presentations from each principal, allowing them to showcase key highlights and initiatives throughout the year. This new format is expected to foster better communication and collaboration within the board, ultimately benefiting the Ketchikan school community.
