South College seeks approval for new nursing program in Dallas

The Texas Board of Nursing convened on July 17, 2025, to discuss a significant proposal from South College to establish a new associate degree nursing education program in Farmers Branch, Texas. This public hearing allowed stakeholders to present their views on whether the proposed program meets the board's established standards for nursing education.

South College, a private institution with campuses across the United States, aims to launch this program in a newly leased 56,000 square foot facility equipped with modern classrooms and advanced simulation labs. The program will span 24 months, incorporating 49 credit hours of coursework, including extensive theory and practical laboratory hours. The curriculum is designed to align with the Texas Board of Nursing's differentiated essential competencies, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their nursing careers.

The proposal includes partnerships with 15 clinical affiliates, covering a range of healthcare settings, from hospitals to outpatient clinics. This collaboration is crucial for providing students with hands-on experience in diverse environments. South College plans to enroll 50 students in its inaugural fall 2025 cohort, with an annual target of 200 students by 2026, allowing for multiple entry points throughout the year.

Dr. Becky Small, the associate dean of nursing at South College, emphasized the institution's commitment to quality education and thanked the board for their support. The board will now review the proposal and the testimonies presented to determine if South College's program meets the necessary requirements for approval.
