Long Beach City Council Joins ACLU's Federal Lawsuit Against Trump Administration

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson announced a bold new initiative during a recent city council meeting, launching the “Long Beach Neighbors Supporting Neighbors” Fund. This fund aims to bolster community support for residents feeling threatened by federal actions, particularly those living in fear of potential abductions by federal agents.

Mayor Richardson, flanked by city council members and a coalition of community, labor, and business leaders, emphasized the importance of dignity, safety, and justice for all Long Beach residents. He highlighted that many families are staying home not due to natural disasters, but out of fear, which ultimately impacts the entire community. “When any member of our community lives in fear, it affects every single one of us,” he stated.

In response to these challenges, the city has taken proactive measures since January, including strengthening its values act and expanding legal defense funding. The mayor announced that the city council has voted unanimously to join a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, led by the ACLU and supported by the state of California. This decision is seen as a tactical move to ensure that Long Beach's participation is both impactful and sustainable.

Richardson expressed gratitude for the council's commitment to justice, stating, “Joining a high-profile federal lawsuit is not a symbolic gesture. It’s a tactical decision.” The city’s legal team is working closely with community advocates to ensure that their efforts effectively protect residents' rights and safety.
