Sixth Graders Present Innovation Projects Addressing Global Issues at Turner School

A groundbreaking student-led initiative took center stage at the MSAD52 Board of Directors meeting on May 29, 2025, showcasing the innovative "Solutionized Project." Coordinated by school counselor Jennifer Simmons, this year-long program empowers sixth graders to tackle global issues through entrepreneurship. Students form small companies, select a country, and develop products aimed at solving real-world problems, such as earthquake-resistant housing designs for Turkey and air pollution filters.

The project culminated in a lively event where students presented their ideas, complete with advertising jingles and live performances. This year, the initiative saw an impressive turnout, with students collectively securing $5.1 million in funding—far exceeding the typical range of $1 to $2 million. Simmons, who has led the project for 23 years, emphasized the depth of creativity and passion displayed by the students, noting that even quieter individuals excelled in areas like graphics and research.

In addition to the Solutionized Project, the meeting highlighted another initiative where students engaged with local farming and organized a sports clinic for younger peers. This hands-on approach not only fosters community involvement but also encourages students to recognize their potential impact.

As the school year wraps up, the board also discussed pressing budget concerns, particularly regarding rising equipment costs for sports programs. With football equipment prices expected to double, the need for sustainable funding solutions is becoming increasingly urgent.
