Freeport High School Foundation Plans Scholarship Expansion with $3.6M Trust Donation

The RSU 05 Board Meeting on July 21, 2025, highlighted a significant milestone for Freeport High School with the management of a $3.6 million scholarship fund from the Norman B. Stetson Trust. This generous donation aims to enhance educational opportunities for students, providing substantial financial assistance and mentorship for those pursuing higher education.

Superintendent Jean Goletta detailed the history of the scholarship, noting that the board had previously voted to accept the funds and that an initial disbursement of over $3 million had already been received. The scholarship will be managed by the Freeport High School Scholarship Foundation, which has been established to address the lack of post-secondary funding for students. Goletta emphasized the foundation's unique approach, which includes mentorship for scholarship recipients throughout their college journey.

Jen Goletta, the foundation's president, shared insights into its mission, stating that it aims to provide not only financial support but also community mentorship. The foundation has already awarded scholarships to students and plans to expand its offerings significantly with the new funds. Currently, the foundation provides $5,000 annually for four years to students attending four-year institutions and $4,000 annually for three years for those pursuing technical or trade education.

The board discussed the criteria for scholarship eligibility, confirming that any student could apply, with a focus on academic commitment and financial need. The meeting also addressed the importance of including the high school principal on the foundation's board to ensure that the scholarship criteria remain aligned with student needs.

As the board moves forward with this partnership, the anticipated outcome is a substantial increase in scholarship opportunities for Freeport High School students, potentially allowing the foundation to support five times the number of students currently receiving aid.
