Leeds Schools Review Budget Adjustments and Announce Special Education Grant Success

The MSAD 52 Board of Directors convened on July 21, 2025, to discuss several key issues impacting the local school community, including transportation adjustments, field maintenance, and updates on school facilities.

One of the primary topics was the proposed changes to the district's transportation budget. The board is considering a shift from purchasing three buses and two vans to acquiring one bus and six vans. This decision comes in response to the high mileage and wear on the current vans, some of which are out of service. The board plans to gather pricing information to finalize this adjustment.

Field conditions were also a significant concern, particularly due to recent heavy rains that have damaged the playing fields. The board decided to limit usage of these fields to allow for recovery, ensuring they remain safe and usable for students and community programs.

In terms of infrastructure, the board reported progress on several projects. An application for water system improvements has been submitted to the state, with hopes of moving forward with engineering bids soon. Additionally, updates on dehumidifiers at GreenCentral School indicate that two units are already installed, with plans for two more over the summer to improve air quality.

The board also highlighted the upcoming roof replacement at Leeds Central School, scheduled for June 16, weather permitting. Furthermore, the wastewater treatment plant is expected to receive new equipment next week, marking a step forward in addressing local environmental needs.

In a positive development for special education, MSAD 52 has been accepted into a five-year grant program aimed at enhancing inclusive education practices. This initiative will provide training for teachers and support for implementing multi-tiered systems of support, positioning the district as a model for inclusive education.

The meeting concluded with a reminder for the community about the upcoming budget referendum, encouraging residents to participate in shaping the future of local education. The next board meeting is scheduled for June 12 at 5:30 PM, where further discussions on these topics will continue.
