Lewiston High School Celebrates College Acceptances and Spring Sports Start

The Lewiston Public Schools School Committee convened on April 7, 2025, to discuss various updates and initiatives impacting the district. The meeting began with a video update from student representative Will Dimon Sanek, a junior at Lewiston High School (LHS). He highlighted the recent March Madness spirit week, which featured themed days and competitive activities, and celebrated the acceptance of LHS students into prestigious colleges, including Harvard and Yale.

As the meeting progressed, the committee addressed the status of spring sports, confirming that LHS would field several teams, including baseball, softball, and track and field. However, concerns were raised about the need for more athletes to ensure all teams are adequately filled.

The committee also prepared for an upcoming city budget presentation scheduled for the following evening. This presentation marks the first step in seeking feedback from the city council, with a follow-up planned for May 6 to finalize the budget before a vote on May 13. The committee emphasized its commitment to community engagement, announcing additional town halls on April 16 and May 12 to discuss the budget and address questions from families.

In light of the recent closure of Saint Dominic Academy, the high school administration is collaborating with the Lewiston Regional Technical Center (LRTC) to inform families about available educational options and support. The committee plans to produce short videos featuring students with post-secondary plans to showcase their achievements and future endeavors.

The meeting also included a report from the city council representative, who shared updates on the city’s budget discussions and ongoing projects, such as a demonstration project on Canal Street aimed at improving pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. The council is also working with the LA Community Market to develop a community food hub.

The session concluded with a call for updates from subcommittees, with a focus on health and wellness initiatives. Overall, the meeting underscored the school committee's efforts to foster student engagement, community involvement, and transparency in budgetary matters.
