Freeport High School Implements Stricter Cell Phone Policy Amid Ongoing Student Pushback

The RSU 5 Board Meeting held on July 21, 2025, focused significantly on the ongoing challenges surrounding cell phone use at Freeport High School. The discussion, led by school administrators, highlighted the recent changes to the school's cell phone policy and the mixed results observed since its implementation.

At the beginning of the school year, the administration introduced a stricter cell phone policy, requiring students to store their phones in designated holders upon entering classrooms. This policy aimed to reduce distractions during academic periods, allowing phone use only during transitions between classes and at lunch. Initially, the policy received positive feedback from parents and students, who were adjusting to the new rules.

However, as the school year progressed, particularly during the winter months, the enforcement of the policy became increasingly challenging. Teachers reported difficulties in managing cell phone use, especially during advisory periods. Some educators began allowing limited phone use as a reward for good behavior, which led to confusion among students regarding the rules.

In response to these challenges, the administration sought feedback from teachers and considered implementing "locked bags" for cell phones, a strategy that has reportedly improved focus in other schools. A significant majority of teachers expressed support for this approach, citing its potential to create a more consistent enforcement of the policy.

The meeting also touched on the need for student input regarding the proposed changes. The administration acknowledged that while teachers were largely in favor of stricter measures, student perspectives had not been adequately considered.

Additionally, the school is exploring educational initiatives, such as inviting a speaker from Project Reboot, to address the impact of cell phone use on students' lives. Although funding for this initiative was not secured, the administration remains committed to finding ways to educate students about responsible phone usage.
