Director Layman outlines district's health services and school safety initiatives

The RSU 22 District Board meeting held on June 12, 2025, featured a comprehensive presentation by Britney Layman, the Director of Health, Wellness, and Safety. Layman outlined her multifaceted role, which encompasses supervising health services, promoting wellness initiatives, and managing school safety protocols.

In her presentation, Layman emphasized the importance of health services within the district. She reported that the nursing team screened 882 students for vision and hearing, successfully referring 57 students for further assistance, primarily for vision issues. Notably, over 20 students received glasses, with support provided for those unable to afford them through free eyeglasses programs. The nursing staff conducted nearly 10,000 office visits, addressing a wide range of health concerns from minor injuries to chronic disease management.

Layman highlighted the presence of 200 students with chronic health conditions, such as asthma and cancer, who have individualized health and emergency plans. Additionally, she noted that 42 students require daily medications, while 120 students have as-needed medications for various health issues.

The presentation also touched on the wellness initiatives aimed at both students and staff. Layman expressed her commitment to reviving employee wellness programs that had diminished during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has implemented monthly newsletters to promote health challenges and incentives for staff, alongside her efforts to engage students in garden-based education.

Layman concluded her presentation by expressing pride in her team and their dedication to enhancing student well-being, indicating a positive outlook for the upcoming school year as all nursing staff are set to return. The meeting underscored the district's ongoing commitment to health and safety, particularly in the wake of the challenges posed by the pandemic.
