Southaven Council Approves Key Purchases and Renovations for City Development

During the Southaven Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting on May 6, 2025, several key resolutions and contracts were approved, signaling significant developments for the city.

One of the primary resolutions authorized a sole source purchase for city parks from Gal XE, totaling $29,156. This purchase is essential for maintaining the parks, ensuring they remain vibrant and accessible for residents.

The board also awarded a bid for the city court renovation to CNM Builders, with the lowest bid amounting to $1,423,506.95. The project is expected to be completed within 250 days, enhancing the facilities available for city court operations.

The meeting also recognized Officer Eric Sutton, who is retiring after 26 years of service in law enforcement. The board approved the surplus of his firearm as a gesture of appreciation for his dedication to the community.

Additionally, a contract with Tyler Technology was approved to enhance the utility department's online services, allowing customers to view their consumption and billing dates. The first-year cost for this service is $9,851.

The board clarified city ordinances regarding conditional use permits for quick-service restaurants, ensuring that such establishments meet specific requirements before approval. This amendment aims to provide clearer guidelines for future developments.

An amendment to the city employee handbook was also passed, establishing new protocols for interdepartmental transfers, which will require completion of a probationary period and approval from department heads.

In a significant investment in public safety, the board authorized the purchase of police vehicles from the Kansas Highway Patrol for $112,825, ensuring that the police department is well-equipped to serve the community.

Lastly, the board approved a task order for enhancing the habitat at Snowden Grove Park in preparation for a fall hummingbird festival, which is expected to attract tourism and beautify the area. The project is budget-neutral, utilizing surplus funds from the parks budget.
